Eight interiors where Barbiecore pink adds a playful touch of colour

As the upcoming Barbie film has created a shortage of pink colour and launched a real-life dollhouse in Malibu, we gathered eight pink interiors to exemplify the Barbiecore aesthetic for this lookbook.

The pink hues that are usually associated with Barbie, a children’s toy first launched by manufacturer Mattel in 1959, are influencing both clothes and interiors ahead of Great Gerwig’s live-action Barbie film.

The style, which has become known as Barbiecore, can add a joyful touch of colour to otherwise pared-back interiors, or be used as a hyper-bright nod to 1980s opulence.

Here, we have gathered eight interiors where pink was used to give interiors additional warmth and a touch of whimsy.

Minimal Fantasy, Spain, by Patricia Bustos Studio

The Minimal Fantasy apartment is anything but minimalist – instead, Patricia Bustos Studio aimed to create an “aesthetic madness” for the interior of this Madrid rental in a 1950s residential building.

The holiday home features 12 different shades of pink, with the entire living room covered in a pastel bubblegum pink.

“Pink vindicates the fall of stereotypes – everything is possible, nothing is planned or established and that’s the beauty of it,” the studio told Dezeen.

A more discrete take on adding pink to an interior can be found in this San Francisco house by architect Jamie Bush, who gave it an overhaul using an eclectic array of furniture.

Bush added pink walls to the dining room, where they contrast against dark-wood vintage furniture and white details including a lamp and sheer curtains to create a playful, yet elegant atmosphere.

The most Barbiecore interior of them all can naturally be found in the Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse, which is being rented out by the doll’s boyfriend Ken on Airbnb.

Inside the California mansion, located beachside in Malibu, guests can enjoy pink rooms including the bright-fuchsia bedroom that has been decorated with cowboy hats, boots and cowhide rugs to add more “Kenergy”.

A dusky baby-pink kitchen decorates the Mixtape apartment in Bilbao, which was designed by architecture studio Azab.

The white and pink cupboards are boarded by light timber strips, and the appliances in the room have also been painted pink. A multicoloured floor with pale green and yellow as well as darker red herringbone tiles give the space a vibrant feel.

“London’s smallest house”, a conceptual design by Studiomama, features an abundance of pink details throughout, including in its plywood-clad kitchen.

Here, the clever fold-out seating has been decorated with blush-pink cushions and pillows, with a pink cushion also forming a cosy backrest.

A computer-generated image was transformed into a real-life interior for the Moco Barcelona store, a rose-coloured shop inside the city’s Moco Museum.

Designer Isern Serra used pink micro-cement to achieve the same uniform, ultra-smooth surfaces as those of the computer-generated image, creating a dream-like interior filled with rounded corners and arches.

London studio Unknown Works went all in on the pink for Pigment House, a Hampstead home that was renovated to add a pink-toned patio area.

While not technically part of the interior, it adds a splash of colour to the ground floor area, and is used for indoor-outdoor living in the summer months. The choice of pink was a reference to the colourful buildings of Mexican architect Luiz Barragán.

Cats’ Pink House, Taiwan, by KC Design Studio

This holiday home in Taiwan got its name, Cats’ Pink House, as it includes cat ladders, a rotating carousel-shaped climbing frame and a fluffy pink cat swing.

KC Design Studio used a mineral-based paint to create the pink walls throughout the home, which also features a pink bathroom – with a pink cat litter box.

Coil Coatings: Architects’ Secret to Brighter Metal Building Façades

The best architecture is tied to community and local contexts. The products manufacturers create for a building bring ideas to life through shapes, colors and materials. As metal structures and product applications have become more commonplace, so too have the variety of ways to express design concepts. This is especially true for metal coatings, used in everything from curtain walls and metal wall panel systems to roofing, louvers and sunshades. Today, manufacturer Sherwin-Williams is reimagining color and expression through coil coatings.

As the manufacturer states when describing their approach to factory-applied coil coatings for architecture, they can “create nearly any color or effect you can dream up.” Coil coating, sometimes called pre-painted metal, is an efficient way to produce a uniform, high-quality, coated finish. The key is that the metal is painted before rather than after fabrication. The types of paint curing used in the coil industry include thermal, infrared, induction and UV cure. Exploring these coatings through color and specific products, the following projects showcase the range of applications created by Sherwin-Williams. Together, they represent a technology that is versatile and high quality, with a range of cost, environmental and performance benefits.


Edmonton Public Library

Designed by Patkau Architects, Edmonton, Canada

The Capilano Library connects its suburban community to nature. The library form is developed from its cross section, which is folded to form three peaks across the site, each with a different scale. Each of the three peaks responds to scale, function, natural light and view. The western peak reflects the scale of the neighborhood with a quiet edge of support spaces along the street. The eastern peak is intimately scaled, with varied seating along a serene window overlooking the nearby ravine. The design is enhanced by the mix of rectangular and polygonal ALPOLIC metal panels that were installed around the library’s exterior.

ALPOLIC metal composite materials deliver excellent flatness and exceptional formability to give the library a sophisticated exterior aesthetic. The metal panels are coated in a Valflon finish supplied by Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings. The rich, vibrant and high-gloss color is a fluoropolymer FEVE resin-based coating that offers color consistency, protection against weathering, chalking and fading, and excellent overall adhesion. This finish also meets the highest performance standards, including AAMA 2605 specifications. In time, the Edmonton Public Library Capilano Branch has become a central space for the community.


Wolf Creek Library

Designed by Leo A Daly, Atlanta, GA, United States

The Wolf Creek Library design was made as a community destination and as a catalyst for growth. The exterior features an outdoor reading garden and terraced seating. The library houses 5,700 square feet of adult collections, 5,000 square feet of children’s collections, a computer/learning station room, teen area, music room, sub-dividable community meeting room for 125 people and two conference rooms with smart boards and projectors. Originally, copper was considered as cladding material for the building’s iconic wedge-shaped façade. But, ultimately, it was determined that ALPOLIC’s aluminium composite material (ACM) was a superior solution.

The custom MRT Prismatic Magma finish would evoke the original copper intent, but offer a more vibrant visual experience. Sherwin-Williams Valflon coating provides the shimmer and shifting colour the architects desired. The simple but geometric design is at once bold but refined and enhanced by the Valflon coil coating. Durable with excellent adhesion and flexibility properties, the FEVE resin allows each prismatic color to have an intense brightness of shade and a high-gloss quality. In the daytime, the Wolf Creek Library’s appearance shifts from copper to red to orange, depending on the time of day, weather conditions and viewing angle.


St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church

The Saint Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church transformed a generic shop building into a place of worship and fellowship. The architects kept the interior simple but utilized box rib metal panels for the exterior. Metal Sales manufactured the T-10A metal walls panels, which are coated in Metallic Silver and Dark Bronze Fluropon colors from Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings. A thin cross, lit up in red, is also visible on the western side of the church.

Marlon Blackwell created an addition on the western side of the 3,600 square-foot building in order to orient the structure toward the eastern axis, which is typical for Greek Orthodox churches. The skylit tower pours red light down into the transition between the narthex and the sanctuary, giving a moment of pause before entering to worship. A narrow cross is suspended on the western side of the tower, backlit by the morning sun to become a beacon for arriving parishioners. Once inside the sanctuary, a transom that spans the entire width of the space faces east and bathes the space in soft morning light during Sunday morning services.


Formosa1140

Designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA], West Hollywood, CA, United States

Located in the heart of Los Angeles, this new eleven unit housing project emphasizes the central importance of shared open space for the residents and the community. Formosa takes what would be the internalized open space of the courtyard and moves it to the exterior of the building to create a park. This plan, O’Herlihy’s firm says, “simultaneously creates density and green space and models a replicable prototype for incremental community-driven city development.” Completed in 2008, the 16,000-square-foot building features a red corrugated metal exterior. Sherwin-Williams was chosen for its flagship Fluropon coating to be the product of choice for Formosa.

Using Sherwin-Williams 70% PVDF Fluropon coating, a custom red color — Coronado Red — was inspired by the iconic nearby Formosa Café, and not only highlighted the texture and pattern of the exterior, but also contrasted with the green shades of the park. The metal façade is made of 12,900 square feet of perforated T16-E panels from Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation, which conceal and shade outdoor walkways on the three-story building, giving residents a sense of privacy in spite of the structure’s openness to the park and street.


National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) holds a prominent place on the National Mall. As the team outlines, the primary architectural idea for the museum was derived from the classical tripartite column with its base, shaft and capital. In Yoruban art and architecture, the column or wooden post was usually crafted with a capital resembling a crown. This crown or corona form is the central idea which has driven the design of the museum.

Reaching toward the sky, the bronze clad corona expresses faith, hope and resiliency. Once the final color idea was identified, the new challenge of obtaining the perfect hue began. Three custom shades, African Sunset, African Sunrise and African Rose, and one standard shade of Black Sherwin-Williams Fluropon coating were used on these massive aluminum panels, each weighing around 200 pounds and stretching 4 by 5 feet. Each panel that was custom cast by Morel Industries was finished with five different coating layers, each a different color of the Fluropon coating, to achieve the exact bronze shade desired by the design team. Eventually, the final color was created, called “Artisan 3.5.”


Central Arizona College, Maricopa Campus

This new ground up campus was designed to create a unique and authentic identity for the growing Central Arizona College. The three building campus is conceptually rooted in its historic agricultural roots and Native American legacy. Structures are conceived as a series of honest, spare and no maintenance ‘academic sheds.’ Deep overhangs let interior academic spaces flow outdoors seamlessly. Corten steel and rammed earth create the primary exterior language eliminating the need for long term maintenance.

The diverse program includes teaching laboratories, classrooms, culinary arts, a café, bookstore, library, learning center, interactive distance learning classrooms, student services, administration and a multipurpose community room. To ensure the unique appearance, Sherwin-Williams Fluropon coating in Cor-Ten AZP was chosen to adorn the facility. This coating achieves the look of Cor-Ten Steel through a two-step process using a print effect Floropon coating. The coating, containing 70% PVDF resins, provides the strongest protection against weathering, aging and pollution for color retention to preserve the beautiful aesthetic of the facility for years to come.

A diagnostic test can detect a stroke within 15 minutes

Spotted: The World Stroke Organization’s Global Fact Sheet 2022 revealed that the absolute number of cases of stroke increased “substantially” between 1990 and 2019. And with that growth, a correspondingly high financial cost is borne by health services. Seeking a way to reduce the mortality rate for large vessel occlusions (LVOs) – the most common kind of stroke – Cambridge, England-based startup Upfront Diagnostics has created a rapidly deployed, mobile, and highly accurate stroke detection kit.  

The company discovered new blood biomarkers that are able to detect strokes, and with that knowledge, built the LVOne. The handheld device uses a single drop of blood from a finger prick to diagnose an acute ischaemic stroke caused by LVO and is designed for use on the go in an ambulance on the way to a hospital A&E. Paramedics administering the test receive results in 15 minutes or less. 

With LVOs responsible for up to 96 per cent of stroke deaths, the ability to identify an occurrence en route to the hospital relieves some of the burden on the receiving care team and allows the patient to access time-sensitive treatment as quickly as possible. Upfront Diagnostics highlights that for every 15 minutes of earlier treatment, there is a cost-saving of over $60,000 (around €53,500) per patient. Multiply that efficiency by the millions of cases of strokes worldwide and the potential reduction in financial burden for health services is enormous.  

Upfront Diagnostics validated the accuracy of its technology by testing 270 patients at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle, UK. After closing a round of seed funding that raised £1.6 million (around €1.9 million), the company plans to scale up the availability of its technology as well as continue research and development (R&D) in order to identify additional types of strokes and refine the system’s overall precision.   

From assistive robots to rehabilitation robotic gloves, Springwise’s archive contains a range of innovative projects focused on improving the health of stroke patients.

Twin Cities: New Architecture Taking Root in Minneapolis and St. Paul

In both Minneapolis and St. Paul, architecture has long been shaped by the Mississippi River. While St. Paul was settled first as it offered a broad river flat for steamboats, Minneapolis grew more organically around St. Anthony Falls. Both cities have a long history dating back to the 1860s, thanks to the growth of agriculture and the lumber industry. Over time,  the Twin Cities gained their moniker from sharing diverse political, cultural and educational institutions.

While styles like the Arts and Crafts movement and Prairie School spread throughout Minneapolis, new structures and streets were built in St. Paul. This included the iconic Summit Avenue, home to the country’s longest avenue of Victorian homes and one of the nation’s best-preserved promenade streets. Over time, well-known architects designed structures in the two cities, including Cass Gilbert, Frank Lloyd Wright and Eero Saarinen. In turn, new architecture continues to be built, highlighting each city’s design culture.

While the architecture of Minneapolis and St. Paul is eclectic across its urban and suburban neighborhoods, new buildings continue to explore what it means to design and build today. The following projects represent a range of these structures built in the Twin Cities over the last ten years.


Minneapolis Public Service Building

Designed by Henning Larsen, Minneapolis, MN, United States

The new Minneapolis Public Service building was designed to better reflect its community. Glass and aluminum facades wrap the building, while double height pockets are carved from the building to break up its massing. Bus and light-rail stations pass by and drop off next to the new building, offering access to from across the city. A large feature stair in the entry foyer provides public space that connects to an extra lobby on the second floor. In turn, the themes of transparency and connection continue inside.

The 370,000-square-foot (34,375-square-meter) building ties into the Minneapolis sprawling network of skyways from the inside out. The office floors contain day-lit workspaces and enclosed offices, as well as a top-floor conference space, café and terrace. Ten city departments and 1,200 employees are brought together in one building. In a government building requiring high security, the design was made to feel open and airy.


Walker Library

Designed by VJAA Inc., Minneapolis, MN, United States

The Walker library was designed to replace an outmoded subterranean facility, reestablishing the street façade that gives Hennepin Avenue its distinctive character and scale. Located adjacent to the Midtown Greenway bike trail and built on the foundations of the previous structure, the new library is positioned at a nexus of multi-modal transportation networks. As VJAA explains, the new stainless steel and glass clad building was designed as a simple figural mass consistent with the iconography of civic buildings.

The form was made to echo the typical low-rise façades with one or two story masses hovering over extensive street level glass. Since the library nearly fills the site, the façades are sculpted to respond to the surrounding context. The upper portion of the east façade is folded to inflect toward the marquee of the iconic 1930’s Uptown Theater. The glass wall of the library is angled back from the street on the southeast corner to widen the sidewalk and acknowledge the constant flow of pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles.


CHS Field

Designed by Snow Kreilich Architects, Saint Paul, MN, United States

CHS Field creates a culmination to Downtown Saint Paul’s 5th Street to the ballpark. With just 7,000 seats, the ballpark is conceived first as a park, a green space in the city and not a building. Entering off Broadway, at street level, the concourse becomes a 360 degree walkway allowing patrons to navigate around the entire field. Concourse amenities are pushed back into the hillside while the seating bowl and playing field are depressed into the natural topography of the site. It was designed to be the greenest ballpark in America.

As a collaboration between Snow Kreilich Architects, Ryan Architecture + Engineering and AECOM, the ballpark was made to be embedded into the city. The suites, club and press box float above the concourse on a light steel frame. The underside of this structure is clad in a continuous soffit of western red cedar. As the team explained, from brownfield to ball field; what was once one of the ten most contaminated sites in the Twin Cities, is now a park within a park consisting of 135 trees, 138,000 square feet (12, 820 square meters) of natural grass, a dog park, a children’s play area and a rain garden featuring local artwork.


Macalester College Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center

HGA designed the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center to anchor the western edge of the Macalester College campus in St. Paul, Minnesota. Built in the 1960s, the structure was in need of an update when college officials sought to redesign the complex. Because of the tight urban location of the campus, new campus construction needed to maximize multi-use possibilities to make every space count. The design team responded with a design for a visual and performing arts complex anchored by a light-filled, two-story arts commons.

Explaining the design and massing, HGA notes that, “the exterior of the newly renovated center establishes an identity for the arts on campus: the façade of the music building features a staccato texture of angled panels that reference the rhythm of musical instruments, while the east side of the studio art building features terracotta louvers that pay homage to clay objects and glazing processes.” Throughout the renovated project, large windows connect the activity of the programs within to the campus outside.


Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity

Designed by Gensler, Minneapolis, MN, United States

As the new home for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, this structure was designed to make physical connections between the community, families and the Habitat staff. As Gensler outlines, the material palette is modest. Residential sized windows are incorporated into the metal panel exterior wall to create both visual and spatial interest throughout. The design team embraced the idea of using the scale and experience of the residential window as part of the project’s overall architectural concept.

Openings were designed to correspond with interior conditions, much like openings in residential homes. A key design element for the building was an urban front porch, connecting the building to the houses designed for families. The strong architectural corner opens up at the base to create a pedestrian friendly experience, revealing the primary entrance, reception and gathering space within the building. This symbol of the front porch connects the exterior and interior experiences.


Lilydale Regional Park Pavilion

Designed by VJAA Inc., Saint Paul, MN, United States

VJJA designed the Lilydale Regional Park shelter as part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Sited on the floodplains of the east bank of the Mississippi River in St. Paul, it is defined by the Mississippi River to the North and Pickerel Lake below the river bluffs to the South. In turn, Harriet Island Regional Park informs the park to the East and the Interstate, 35‐E, to the west. The park is 384‐acres (155 hectares) which includes the 100‐acre (40-hectare) Pickerel Lake and an additional 100 acres (40 hectares) of wetland/marsh.

This new picnic shelter and park support space creates a gathering place for visitors to Lilydale Regional Park. It helps accommodate groups in the park, provides additional programming space, and helps support recreational trails, fishing and boating, birdwatching, play areas and non‐motorized park access. The gentle, folding roof creates covered gathering space for people and visitors to come together.


Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum

Lakewood follows the distinctly Americanized tradition of the Lawn Plan cemetery — a mix of large family monuments and individual grave markers arranged within open, sweeping lawns framed by trees and softly curving roads. Inspired by the landscape of Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, a new 24,500 square foot (2, 275 square meter) mausoleum connects to its context and includes burial space for more than 10,000 people, a chapel, reception center, and landscaping on four acres. Rooted in its materials, horizontal bands of split-faced gray granite tie the structure to the earth.

Challenged with adding a large structure to a much-beloved place, the design team developed a strategy that protected and enhanced the cemetery’s historic landscape. Two-thirds of the program is tucked into a hillside to minimize the massing at the street level. A green roof planted over the lower level extends the cemetery’s lawn while angled grass mounds articulate skylights for the building’s subterranean spaces. At the Mausoleum’s entry, a white mosaic pattern rendered in infinite loops across white billowing surfaces reimagines the historic Lakewood Chapel’s colorful mosaic interiors.


Xcel Substation Enclosures

Two Xcel Energy substation enclosures were designed in Minneapolis, called Hiawatha West and Midtown. These were made to respond to multiple requirements and operate at multiple scales: the city, the neighborhood, and the substation-proper. Driven by extensive community feedback and requirements of the Public Utilities Commission, the architecture of these enclosures responds to their community settings as well as to substation functional requirements.

Delving into the design, the team made the upper walls of both enclosures sculptural and iconographic, pushing their material capacities while enhancing the sense of urban connectivity along the city’s Greenway. A galvanized steel framework draws on substation tectonics to support brightly-colored anodized aluminum cladding. This cladding provides surfaces of shifting translucency and reflectiveness that respond to the wall’s visibility at a variety of distances, travel speeds, and vantage points. In contrast, the lower walls operate at a more intimate scale, reflecting their unique neighborhood settings.

Michael Hsu utilises soft shapes for Austin skyscraper interiors

US studio Michael Hsu Office of Architecture has designed the common areas and amenity spaces for a residential skyscraper in Austin, Texas, which include a circular outdoor swimming pool.

The 51-storey 44 East Avenue development on the city’s riverfront was designed by Page Architects, and includes 330 condominiums and a variety of shared amenities for residents.

Local studio Michael Hsu Office of Architecture took an organic approach when designing the communal spaces, introducing soft shapes and natural materials to the glass and concrete structure.

“44 East combines nature and design with the idea of home,” said studio founder Michael Hsu. “It’s an unexpected expression of what beautiful, livable, modern spaces can be.”

The bright lobby features light colours, curved surfaces, and a blend of hard and soft materials.

Poured concrete terrazzo floors are intended to echo the gravel of the nearby riverside trail, while plaster ceilings are subtly smooth-edged to mimic the undersides of boats.

A glazed atrium with curved corners divides the ground floor and brings the landscaping by DWG further into the building.

Lounges on either side are furnished with a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces, which add colour and texture.

The reception desk has rounded edges and sides, and a glossy mint-green finish. It sits on a chrome base that matches a custom pendant light over a nearby seating area.

“[The communal areas are] a completely designed experience, one that allows for a multitude of ways of living,” Hsu said. “It represents creativity and design without pretension.”

On the 11th floor, a series of spaces are oriented towards views of the Colorado River and the leafy neighbourhoods to the south.

Adjacent is a partially covered patio for barbecuing and dining al fresco, oriented around a planter with a tree that grows up through a hole in the slatted canopy.

Indoor spaces on this level are decorated in pastel hues to match those found in the residences, which were designed by Page.

Further amenity areas on the 37th floor feature jewel tones and darker materials, such as the stone flooring, as well as fixtures including a large moon-like pendant light above a circular sofa.

“We hope that this space feels both fresh and welcoming, a place that has new moments to discover, but that is comfortable and familiar,” said Hsu. “Design here is part of the resident’s everyday experience, rather than reserved for a special occasion.”

Austin continues to grow as a desirable place to live and work, and has seen a boom in development across residential, commercial and hospitality sectors as a result.

Plans for a supertall skyscraper in the city were unveiled in November 2022, although cut back significantly six months later, leaving another supertall by KPF in the running to become Texas’ tallest building.

Meanwhile, a concrete office complex, a sculptural tower, and a technologically advanced sports arena have all been completed in Austin over the past year.

Michael Hsu Office of Architecture has also wrapped up a string of projects in its home state, from converting a 1930s Austin church into a design office to designing a cosy Japanese restaurant in Houston.

A robot brings EV charging to your parking space 

Spotted: In 2021, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) doubled from the previous year, reaching an all-time high of 6.6 million. Growth looks likely to continue, with the first figures from 2023 showing year-on-year increases. Where the dynamism of the market may stumble is in the lack of public charging infrastructure. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns in its Global EV Outlook 2022 report that the number of public charging stations that governments and agencies have announced as planned may not be enough to power the growing number of EVs on the road. 

Rather than reconfigure public parking ramps to find room for stationary charging stations, USA-based EV Safe Charge is turning to robotics for a mobile, bookable EV charging solution. Called ZiGGY, the company’s robotic charger debuted at the Dallas Fort Worth airport in May 2023. Designed to make EV charging easy and convenient, the robot reserves a parking space for the driver when a charge is requested through the app. 

Upon arrival at the airport car park, drivers receive directions to the space the robot has reserved for them. When they return, a fully charged vehicle awaits. The robotic charging stations provide a variety of benefits for car park owners, including sizeable advertising space on two sides of the robot and the elimination of the need to dedicate significant amounts of space to permanent charging stations.  

By offering EV charging-as-a-service, airports and other large commercial spaces provide customers with a safer, smoother experience. Car owners don’t have to waste time and battery power searching for an available charging centre, and frequent flyers don’t have to worry about returning to an uncharged car battery.  

Other innovations in Springwise’s archive that are helping upgrade the global EV charging network include a platform that tracks electricity prices for the most cost-effective charge and an artificial-intelligence-powered (AI) app that charges connected vehicles when the price is best.

Melbourne-based architecture studio Edition Office presents Fenwick St, a newly completed residential development situated on the edge of the Birrarung/Yarra River in Kew, Australia. This location offers unobstructed connections to breathtaking landscapes rarely found in such close proximity to the city. With the site surrounded by well-preserved 1950’s and 1960’s post-war houses, the architects sought to create the concrete complex as a contextually sensitive addition that balances density with visual porosity, while ensuring a connection to the lush natural surroundings.

a trio of residential pavilions

 

To maintain a strong connection to the distant vista while preserving the link between Fenwick St and the public realm, Edition Office emphasized drawing these connections deep into the plan and through the site to the street. In order to achieve this, the architects designed three visually independent pavilions rather than a single large structure. This approach allowed for a balance of similar scaled forms with neighboring houses and enabled the framing of views within the site itself.

 

The pavilions, connected by a common basement, were strategically positioned to optimize the site’s characteristics. Located at a sharp bend in the street, the split between the pavilions occurs at the fulcrum, creating a dynamic arrangement. As the pavilions extend past the site, they lower in scale at the street level, aligning with the neighboring residences, while gradually increasing in height as they integrate with the terrain leading to the escarpment.

The living spaces within Fenwick St were carefully planned to open towards the north, the river, and the valley, allowing the distant landscape to become an integral part of the internal experience. Circulatory paths were strategically designed to draw the surrounding environment deep into the plan, while bedrooms and ancillary spaces opened to the green spaces between pavilions, offering views through a copper mesh privacy veil. This nature inspired the team to blend the architecture into into its surroundings, with landscape designed by Eckersley Garden Architecture.

 

The need to anchor the building into the site led to a construction that appears rooted to the ground. By slightly shifting and rotating each floor plate, movement was introduced to the shear walls, softening the overall mass and scale. Copper screening was used to bring delicacy to the purposefully heavy pre-cast concrete construction, with the screens expected to age gracefully over time.

In addition to connecting with the landscape, creating light-filled private spaces filled with comfort and attention to detail was a key driver for Edition Office in the design of Fenwick St. Flack Studio, responsible for the interiors, imbued the spaces with warmth, calmness, and moments of dramatic nuance. Material tactility and the evolving patina of surfaces, such as the weathering copper screens and the maturation of the surrounding gardens, added depth and character to the interiors. The careful craftsmanship of junctions and thresholds enhanced the joy of navigation throughout the spaces.

The project brief called for the creation of nine new dwellings on a site that previously accommodated only one. In order to respect the immense environmental and cultural value of the location, Edition Office aimed to minimize the perceived mass of a single large volume. Instead, the design resulted in three distinct forms that conform to the domestic patterns and scale of the existing streetscape. These wedge-shaped pavilions meet at their narrowest points, creating moments of architectural exuberance and unobstructed sight-lines both within the site and towards the horizon.

Akio Isshiki Architects marries old and new with Japanese home and restaurant

Japanese studio Akio Isshiki Architects has transformed an old wooden building into a warm-toned home and public restaurant named House in Hayashisaki Matsue Beach.

Located on a coastal street in Akashi in southern Japan, the mixed-use space was built within a 50-year-old building for a local designer and features a curry restaurant as well as residential and working spaces.

Designed to reflect traditional Japanese dwellings, the home and restaurant are contained within a wooden building that was previously dark and separated.

During the renovation, Akio Isshiki Architects aimed to pair existing elements with modern features to reflect the mixed-use nature of the project.

“The house was divided into small rooms, narrow and dark,” studio founder Akio Isshiki told Dezeen.

“It was very old and damaged, but fortunately the carpenter had done a good job, there were no leaks, and the structure was solid.”

Accessed from the roadside, a series of circular stones form a path that leads through the planted front garden and curves to extend along the front of the building, providing access to the ground-floor restaurant.

Here, a stepped sheltered porch features external seating and is separated from the interior space by a wide sliding glass door set in a timber frame, which offers views into the garden and can be fully opened to connect the dining space to the outside.

Inside, the floor has been coated with dark tiles informed by the history of the area, which was formerly a large tile producer.

“These tiles were handcrafted one by one by tile craftsmen in Awaji, with the image of lava stone pavements seen in cities in Central and South America superimposed on the texture and edge shape,” said the studio.

It draws on traditional Japanese homes

Wooden furnishings, including bespoke D-shaped chairs designed by the studio and created by a local woodworker, are arranged throughout the dining space at the front of the building.

“To ensure stability even on uneven floors, three legs are used as a base for the chairs, and the legs are made of a thick material so that they do not fit in the joints of the Kawara tiles,” said Isshiki.

“I aimed for a primitive design with an unknown nationality, with as simple and crude a composition as possible.”

Separated from the main space by an earth-toned counter, the kitchen is tucked into one side of the dining room and features walls clad in wooden panels and white tiles, along with a lighting fixture formed from two circles that hangs in the street-facing window.

A Japanese shoji screen at the end of the dining room is the first of a series of flexible partitions throughout the home that can be pulled out to provide separation between the spaces.

“Conscious of the tropics and nostalgia, we put nets that look like mosquito nets and sudare blinds on the shoji screens,” said the studio. “The graceful plans created by imperfect partitions such as shoji and fusuma are typical of ancient Japanese architecture.”

“In this house, where cultures, nationalities, times, and various other things are combined, I thought it would be appropriate to have the spaces partially mixed so that they could feel the presence of each other, rather than being permanently partitioned in terms of usage,” it continued.

Built on a raised timber platform, the rest of the ground floor holds private rooms for the client, which are divided by shoji screens, including a traditional Japanese room that opens onto a garden.

A home office borders the dining space, where a central black ladder leads to the floor above, while a bedroom, bathroom and utility room branch from the other side of the corridor.

Upstairs, the studio added an open arrangement of dining and living spaces with warm-toned surfaces including a red wall and dark wooden beams that interact with the home’s original rustic roof structure.

“The wall on the second floor is a scraped wall mixed with red iron oxide and finished by a plasterer from Awaji,” said Isshiki. “This is an attempt to incorporate the colourful walls of each country into architecture in a Japanese context.”

Mitsubishi Jisho Design creates food-waste teahouse in Venice

Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Jisho Design has made a teahouse from food-waste-based materials at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Architects Takaaki Fuji, Hiroya Inage and De Yuan Kang from Mitsubishi Jisho Design designed the teahouse for the Time Space Existence exhibition held by the European Cultural Center during this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

The teahouse was named Veneti-An – a combination of the words Venetian and An, which means a small hut in Japanese and is often used in names of  teahouses.

It was designed to offers visitors a place to experience a Japanese tea ceremony and reflect on how people connect following the Covid pandemic.

“The point of this exhibition is to explore, to use it as a lab, to make people think,” said De Yuan Kong said.

“It’s all about creating conversations.”

The tea house was built from varied of materials made from food waste including coffee grounds and pasta, who are common foods in Venice.

Along with 7,165 paper tubes and 128 cork floor panels, it includes 74 coffee-ground-made panels and 2,324 joint components made from discarded pasta. According to the architects, the pasta-based joint components produced by Fabula are as durable as concrete.

“I feel that the exterior material in architecture is limited,” said Fuji.

“Our intent is to explore new technologies in construction, which could result in stronger regional identities and expression.”

The angle of the struts that make up the pavilion was set at 45 degrees. This was determined by the city’s latitude to further connect it to the city.

“By adapting the joint shape to the latitude of the place where it is placed, a distinctive identity is created in the form, as well as a teahouse that optimally lets in or shields it from sunlight in response to the local environment,” said the architects.

Veneti-An is waterproof as its components were treated with a silicon-based liquid by Japanese silica coating producer SilicaGen.

The team will measure and record changes to the materials used during the six month exhibition as part of its research on sustainable materials, responding to the overall biennale’s theme – Laboratory of the Future.

To build the pavilion, the architects packed the components, a total weight of 255.5 kilograms, into seven 87-litre suitcases and took them from Japan to Italy.

Following the biennale, the teahouse will be dismantled and rebuilt into pieces of furniture.

“Neither 100 per cent manufactured nor 100 per cent self-built, it is a piece of furniture that allows for modification and addition of a personal touch,” said the designers.

“The dimensions of the parts were determined on the premise of turning into furniture, or perhaps it would have been better to describe it as furniture transformed into a teahouse for the exhibition’s duration only.”

The tea house is located in Marinaressa Gardens alongside a concrete emergency housing prototype developed by the Norman Foster Foundation and Holcim as part of the Time Space Existence exhibition.

The group show presents work by architects, designers and artists from 52 different countries in venues across the city. Also as part of the show SOM and Princeton University used AR to construct a self-balancing arch.

Home insulation made from sheep wool

Spotted: Cooling technologies generated over 1 gigatonne of CO2 emissions in 2022. And at the same time, heating is responsible for over 4 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions every year. Huge change is needed to reach net zero, and more efficient insulation will play a big part in regulating temperatures inside as climate change makes extreme temperatures more commonplace.

One solution is Thermafleece, which utilises the natural benefits of sheep’s wool to allow homeowners to select a more durable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly insulation.  

Thermafleece is 75 per cent coarse dark wool, a part of sheep’s wool that traditionally goes to waste, and 25 per cent recycled polyester. Because sheep eat plants that have absorbed CO2, wool, itself, also locks up that CO2 from the atmosphere, making Thermafleece’s insulation a form of carbon sequestration.  

Additionally, the compact method by which Thermafleece is transported helps cut down on transport impacts by around 50 per cent, according to the company. The product then expands to normal size when unpacked. Thermafleece also has a house lifetime guarantee which means replacement and repair costs are all alleviated, and the company claims the insulation will pay for itself in saved energy costs in about 4 years. 

Thermafleece is exclusively made in Britain and made with British wool. It is commercially available in various forms such as rolls or slabs, depending on the need of the customer, as well as a separate recycled plastic insulation.
