Augmented Drawing: Redefining Sketching for the Digital Age

Augmented drawing involves overlaying digital content onto the physical world through the lens of augmented reality. This process smoothly integrates digital elements, such as 3D models, animations or interactive effects, into real-world environments. Unlike traditional drawing methods confined to paper or canvas, augmented drawing liberates architects and designers from spatial limitations, enabling them to interact with their creations dynamically.

One of its most exciting aspects of augmented drawing is its interactive nature. Unlike static sketches on paper, augmented drawings can come to life through animations, sound effects and interactive elements. Architects can create dynamic compositions that respond to user input or change over time, transforming passive viewers into active participants. This level of interactivity adds a new layer of engagement and immersion to the creative process, captivating audiences in ways that traditional sketches cannot. By overlaying digital models onto physical environments in real-time, architects can explore spatial relationships, evaluate design proposals and visualize concepts with unprecedented clarity.

Admittedly, Augmenter Reality’s (AR) most groundbreaking quality is its ability to connect each specific architectural design with its site context. Consequently, augmented drawing offers architects a powerful toolkit for site analysis and contextual integration, enabling them to overlay digital models onto real-world environments to assess factors such as sunlight exposure, topography and surrounding architecture. By contextualizing designs within their physical surroundings, architects can ensure that their proposals harmonize with existing landscapes and urban contexts, enhancing the overall sustainability and livability of built environments.

Augmented drawings also facilitate collaboration among stakeholders throughout the design and construction phases. By creating shared virtual environments, architects, clients, engineers and contractors can collectively visualize and interact with design proposals, fostering consensus and alignment on project objectives. It also provides intuitive tools for marking, highlighting and annotating design elements within the augmented environment. This visual communication not only promotes clarity but also reduces the potential for misinterpretation, leading to more efficient decision-making and smoother project workflows during construction.

Still, apart from these more “obvious” applications of AR, there have been numerous innovative projects where augmented drawings are used to access environments and spaces, which so far have been out of reach. One example is CapitolaVR’s Rembrant Reality App in Mauritshuis museum, which allows visitors to literally enter Rembrandt van Rijn’s painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.

The painting’s virtual environment was made through 3D scanning techniques and actors, who posed as the subjects of the painting, creating a portal to a past, fictional setting. This revolutionary merging of art and technology suggests countless possibilities for architects and uncovers ways of accessing, experiencing and even redesigning spaces that were not only physically but also conceptually perceived.

Several tools and platforms have emerged to facilitate augmented drawing experiences. Techniques for augmented drawing vary depending on the desired outcome and the chosen platform. Architects may begin by sketching outlines on paper before overlaying digital elements using AR-enabled devices. Alternatively, they can directly draw within AR environments, leveraging tools like gesture recognition and spatial tracking to refine their compositions with precision. The one thing that remains constant, however, is that augmented drawing not only expands the possibilities of artistic expression but also transforms the creative process itself.

By bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds, AR fosters a symbiotic relationship between the artist and their creation, blurring the lines between creator and spectator. It also democratizes creativity by lowering barriers to entry and fostering inclusivity. With accessible tools and intuitive interfaces, individuals from diverse backgrounds can engage in the artistic process, transcending traditional skill barriers to unleash their creative potential.

Since the beginning of the profession, sketching has been the most freeing tool for architectural drawing. It translates ideas, concepts and intentions to lines, textures and experiences, becoming the mediator between inception and reality. Ironically, augmented drawing blurs these boundaries even more. Its constant improvement on producing accurate spatial mappings and high-resolution augmented overlays leads to the creation of countless highly realistic augmented environments, which become backdrops for pioneering architectural designs, architectural conservation practices and real-time assembly processes.

An easy-to-use platform for creating digital workers  

Spotted: Today, human employees spend hundreds of hours doing repetitive and mindless intellectual tasks such as data entry, client prospecting, and form-filling. Automation is the natural solution to this problem, but, traditionally, automation tools have been built by individual organisations to perform individual tasks, which creates bottlenecks for their deployment at scale. 

To tackle this, startup 11xAI has created Platform X, a user-friendly, no-code platform accessible to individuals from various professions. This technology allows for the creation and deployment of ‘digital workers’ that can streamline workflows, whether for tasks that are highly specific to an individual or organisation, or broad general purposes. 

Platform X is particularly beneficial for small businesses, which haven’t traditionally had access to automation at the scale that can be achieved by their larger peers. Without this access, small businesses risk being left behind as the economy is increasingly filled with automated agents. The ability to easily create digital workers is therefore especially important for this segment of the market.  

To demonstrate the power of its platform, 11xAI has developed Alice, a ‘digital’ sales representative that automates outbound sales efficiently and at a lower cost than humans. The company reports that Alice has so far sent over 10,000 emails, saving early adopting sales teams thousands of days of work. Its research also indicates that emails sent by Alice have three times higher response rates than those sent by humans. 

Although outbound sales were chosen to demonstrate the power of Platform X, the possible uses of the technology are extremely broad. And this potential has convinced investors, with the startup receiving $2 million (around €1.8 million) in pre-seed funding in August of this year.

Springwise has spotted other ways technology is transforming the workforce, including by predicting future skills gaps and supporting employee wellbeing online.

Digital reefs for protecting vulnerable coasts

Spotted: Rising demand for leisure trips is fuelling a rapid growth in global coastal and maritime tourism, with a market size worth more than $2.9 trillion (around €2.7 trillion). Many of these coastal destinations rely on reefs to protect wildlife, beaches, and communities from erosion and severe climate events. But the world’s reefs are in danger – around 14 per cent of the world’s coral was lost between 2009 and 2020.

CCell is working to heal damaged reefs, with artificial reefs powered by renewable energy that allow corals, bivalves, and other organisms to thrive. The company’s reefs use a steel frame and calcareous rock is grown around this, acting as a substrate for plants and coral to attach. Units are constructed in sections and transported to reefs that need repair.

Once in place, a safe low-voltage current is passed between a small metal anode and the steel structure. At the anode, oxygen is produced, nourishing marine life. On the main steel structure, which acts as the cathode, the pH rises and prompts the precipitation of dissolved minerals in seawater. The result is a calcareous rock, mainly Aragonite and Brucite, that fills in missing reef sections. The electrolysis is powered using energy from the waves.

CCell’s innovation relies on a digital management system – CCell Sense – allowing power output to be optimised and renewable energy to be distributed carefully across a structure.

Research and development of CCell’s concept was funded using £2 million (around €2.3 million) in government, non-equity funding last year. In 2022, the company also launched various pilot projects to prove the viability of its solution, including in Yucatan, Mexico.

Saving the world’s coral reefs is the subject of a wide range of recent innovations, from using natural antioxidants to stop coral bleaching to 3D-printed reefs made from cremated remains.

Digital tech supports smallholder farmers in Ghana 

Spotted: There is a significant gap in agricultural production in Africa, with the continent being home to 25 per cent of the world’s arable land, but responsible for only 10 per cent of global agricultural output. Researchers point to the legacy of “export-oriented colonial agricultural production systems” that have resulted in Africa being the only region in the world where increased exports caused a reduction in food production per capita. 

Ghana-based fintech company Wami Agro is working hard to close the gap by turning smallholder farmers into stewards of high-production, yet sustainable land. Through a bundle of services, Wami Agro provides credit, access to fair trade markets and prices, and education that increases knowledge and resilience among farmers, thereby lessening shocks to supply chains and providing a steadier source of income to thousands of families. 

Many of the farmers that Wami Agro works with are women, and, given that this group has generally been underserved by traditional credit systems, the company’s input finance solution, Wami Credit, enables more and more people to become self-sufficient and provide for their families. Wami Credit supplies farmers with seeds, tools, and fertiliser via Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) that fund farmers with little to no access to commercial bank credit.  Wami Agro takes repayment of its loans via the commercial sales of a farmer’s crop.

Wami Market, meanwhile, provides reliable market access with fair prices by buying from various smallholders and selling in bulk to distributors and retailers in Europe and beyond. The buyers, for their part, receive a fully traceable product that is grown with biodiverse, regenerative methods that enrich local environments.  

Wami Info is a third solution that educates farmers on new techniques for building capacity and provides important weather updates in local dialects to help improve long-term resilience, even in changing climates.

The startup is currently focusing on further developing its technology and plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) for more personalised weather alerts. The company also plans to continue expanding its network of farmers, regionally and internationally.  

Smallholder farmers are such an important part of the global economy that Springwise’s library includes a variety of innovations highlighting their contributions and improvements to the world’s food and produce supply chains. Examples include using regenerative farming to sequester carbon and using microforests to retain and regrow important regions of biodiversity.

Digital passports for products – Springwise

Spotted: For many companies, more than 70 per cent of their carbon footprint is composed of scope 3 emissions – those that occur in an organisation’s wider value chain. But keeping tabs on these emissions is a hard task, as it can be difficult to trace materials through every stage of the supply chain. 

One of the specific problems associated with the data gathering process, is the need to collect information from suppliers that might be sensitive. But now, Dutch startup Circularise is tackling this problem through its digital product passports. 

Circularise’s technology generates a digital passport for each different raw material that goes into each component. Companies at the end of the supply chain then add their own information to create a new digital passport for the final product. This facilitates re-use and recycling by providing reliable information on a product’s composition and provenance. 

All this information is recorded in an immutable format on a public blockchain. This provides superior levels of verification compared to other digital passport solutions, which use private blockchains.  

What really separates Circularise from its competitors, is the startup’s focus on helping suppliers share sensitive information on topics such as environmental impact, material composition, or life cycle assessment data. It does this through its patent-pending Smart Questioning technology. This uses advanced cryptography techniques – called zero-knowledge proofs – that allow suppliers to prove their claims without the need to provide sensitive raw data.  

Suppliers answer lists of questions at an agreed level of disclosure – from full disclosure to no disclosure of underlying data. The verifying company can then choose a question from the list, and the supplier provides the answer. If the question is set at the highest level of data privacy, the answer is provided alongside a cryptographic proof. Smart Questioning verifies this proof against the raw data without the data itself being revealed to the verifier.

In the archive, Springwise has spotted other innovations working to modernise the supply chain, including a platform that provides product transparency to customers and another that helps companies decarbonise.

A digital field factory speeds up the construction of solar farms

Spotted: As the global community seeks ways to scale solutions as part of the commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, experts agree that terawatts of renewable energy are needed. Scaling solar is the mission of California-based company Terabase Energy. With more than 50 terawatts of solar energy needed as quickly as possible in order to achieve world decarbonisation goals, the company recently introduced the world’s first automated field factory for solar farm production. 

Terabase works as the lead construction partner for utility-scale solar plant projects, providing everything from performance modelling and terrain mapping, to in-the-field manufacturing and grid-friendly plant management technologies. The new factories, called Terafab, use robotics-assisted construction, IoT-connected (Internet of Things) sites, and round-the-clock capability. 

By using a digital twin of the solar plant location, Terabase’s systems help developers make the most of limited resources. The Terabase platform can reduce the time engineers need to spend on site by up to 40 times, and its simulation ability helps plant managers track and predict voltage outputs for multiple years.  

The Terafab factories greatly reduce safety risks to human workers by eliminating the need for them to lift and carry heavy panels in harsh weather conditions. The automated aspect means that the construction of a plant can run continuously, thereby reducing the overall time and cost of development.  

Terabase opened its Terafab manufacturing facility – a “factory to make factories” – in Woodland, California earlier this year. The company also recently raised $25 million (around €22.3 million) to support its expansion, and has several commercial projects lined up later in the year that will use Terafab for their construction needs.  

Other innovations from Springwise’s archive that showcase developments in the photovoltaics field include a fully circular and open-source solar cell design and solar-powered cooling sheds for communities without access to steady refrigeration.
