A new era of energy: district heating and cooling that uses CO2

Spotted: Almost 25 per cent of the energy produced worldwide is used to heat and cool homes and commercial buildings. And the process of generating this energy is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. District heating and cooling systems are one potential solution. These generate heat centrally and distribute it across a network of buildings in the same neighbourhood, which is more efficient than heating or cooling buildings individually. Usually, such systems use water to transfer heat, but now, Swiss cleantech startup ExerGo is using CO2 as an energy transfer fluid for its closed-loop system.

The CO2 is the basis of a thermal network powered by renewable resources and waste heat. By using liquid and vapour CO2 as a working fluid, the system increases energy transport efficiency over conventional water-based systems. This greater efficiency, in turn, allows for the use of small and more flexible piping, which can save up to 60 per cent in installation costs and time, while reducing noise and air pollution. ExerGo claims that its compact network can save up to 80 per cent in primary energy consumption over comparable fossil fuel-based systems.

In October last year, ExerGo won the European Heat Pump Association‘s Heat Pump City of the Year Award for the successful implementation of its technology in Sion, Switzerland.

Springwise has spotted other technologies that are helping to decarbonise the energy-intensive cooling and heating systems used around the world, including a heat pump that is powered by sound and affordable geothermal heating and cooling systems.

MVRDV and LOLA plan new green district in Düsseldorf

 

MVRDV has collaborated with landscape architects LOLA to conceptualize the Grüne Mitte project in Düsseldorf, prioritizing open communication, negotiation, and compromise in urban development. Initiated by Cube Real Estate, the project aims to introduce nearly 500 new apartments, with 50 percent allocated to social or affordable housing. Additionally, the development incorporates community spaces to enhance the overall well-being of the neighborhood. The proposed site in Flingern-Süd currently hosts an underutilized shopping center, supermarket, and car park complex built just 11 years ago. The neighboring Kiefernstraße, known for squatting since the 1980s and vibrant street art, adds a unique aspect to the community dynamics. To ensure community involvement and support, the team engaged in a participation process, collaborating to align development objectives with the diverse needs of the community. This approach has facilitated the integration of social and affordable housing and the creation of community spaces that contribute positively to the neighborhood.

A Sustainable and Community-Informed Design

 

MVRDV (see more here) and LOLA (see more here) conducted a series of workshops to involve residents in the development process. Interviews were held, and brainstorming sessions took place to gather ideas. Through this collaborative process, key requirements emerged, including the importance of retaining the supermarket as a social meeting spot, improving connectivity to neighboring city districts, and incorporating public spaces for an inclusive social environment. Designers presented three outline proposals for residents to discuss, with the Grüne Mitte design, featuring blocks around a central green space, being the most popular choice. The central park-like space within the block reduces paved or built surfaces from 98 percent to 62 percent, serving as a community hub accessible through various passages. This green area features amenities like kiosks, sports facilities, and playgrounds, contributing to increased biodiversity and a pleasant microclimate.

To economically support this large green space, a spatial compromise led to the inclusion of an office high-rise on the southwestern corner. Despite not aligning with the city’s high-rise plan, community support prompted special approval. The design team, considering community preferences, presented three proposals for the high-rise. The final 17-story design incorporates stacked blocks, with the lower one aligning with the Grüne Mitte, and the upper block twisted to complement the neighborhood’s features. Sustainability measures include green roofs, photovoltaic panels, cross-laminated timber floors, and an urban mining approach. The building’s façades celebrate diversity, with different treatments for each block, and some walls proposed for street art collaborations with Kiefernstraße residents.

TVK designs limestone buildings for “first zero-carbon district” in Paris

French architecture practice TVK has completed a neighbourhood in Paris made up of limestone buildings surrounding a garden and designed as a sustainable development that aims to increase biodiversity.

Located on a triangular site in Paris’s 19th arrondissement, the project is “the capital’s first zero-carbon district”, according to TVK.

Named Îlot Fertile, which translates to “fertile island” in French, it contains apartments, a youth hostel, student residences, a hotel, offices, restaurants, shops and sports facilities.

The four buildings that make up the neighbourhood range in height from seven to nine storeys tall, each with ground-floor levels made from low-carbon concrete and designed to achieve large, unobstructed interior spaces.

The upper levels were made from load-bearing limestone sourced mainly from the local Ile-de-France region, aiming to reduce the carbon cost of transportation.

TVK claims the 35,200-square-metre development is the largest load-bearing stone building site since Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s reconstruction of Paris in the mid-19th century.

“Each material is used in the right place and the right quantity,” TVK founders Pierre Alain Trévelo and Antoine Viger Kohler told Dezeen.

“We chose to use mainly limestone from the Paris region – it’s the same one used to build the Haussmann buildings.”

Public spaces, including restaurants and shops, are located on the ground floors of the buildings and open onto the central garden.

Hotel accommodations and apartments are on the upper levels, and a raised outdoor level provides additional garden spaces with an orchard, vegetable patches, insect hotels and nest boxes.

Office spaces are located in a building that sits parallel to a railway line and, aiming to work with the site’s existing topology and move as little earth as possible, TVK designed a sunken sports centre in a large hole on the site to create an interior with high ceilings.

“The biggest challenge of the project was to bring together more than a dozen programmes and turn them into a fully-fledged part of the city,” said Trévelo and Kohler.

“The shape of each building is linked to the very specific geometry of the site shaped by the railway infrastructure,” they continued. “This brings diversity to a building complex of this scale.”

TVK designed Îlot Fertile to have a minimal carbon footprint in its construction and operation. It topped the buildings with photovoltaic panels and green roofs to produce energy while also aiming to increase biodiversity.

“Its proximity to public transport means that Îlot Fertile does not require any car parking, and we used a bioclimatic design to keep energy requirements to a minimum for heating, cooling and lighting,” said Trévelo and Kohler.

“For the small amount of energy that will be consumed, the project plans to compensate for it by producing green energy via bio-solar roofs.”

“Driven by the City of Paris’ ambition for ecological transition, zero-carbon is a long-term objective for the life of the entire operation,” added Trévelo and Kohler.

Elsewhere in Paris, Christ & Gantenbein completed a 124-metre-long steel-clad housing block, and RSHP unveiled its design for a “post-carbon” neighbourhood that will be located in the La Défense business district.

Miami, a rapidly growing city known lately for its diverse and innovative architecture, is about to welcome Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF)‘s ‘Tower 36’ to its skyline. The luxury high-rise office building, developed by One Thousand Group together with architect of record ODP Architecture & Design, has just received unanimous approval to be realized in the heart of Miami’s Design District. This upcoming skyscraper will further redefine the city’s urban fabric and contribute to the area’s evolution into a mixed-use neighborhood. Rising 635 feet and covering 922,000-square-feet, it will become the tallest building in the neighborhood, promising sweeping views of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

One of the defining features of Miami’s Tower 36 is its glass facade, which the architects at Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) design to gracefully reveal terraces on every office floor. This arrangement creates a visual sense of movement and activity across the building, inviting occupants to connect with their surroundings and enjoy enhanced views. Accentuated by light bronze soffit accents, these outdoor spaces will provide tenants with an elevated office experience that celebrates the natural beauty of Miami’s sunny, coastal landscape.

Complementing the office floors above, the podium of KPF’s Tower 36 will host a curated selection of retail spaces. This podium will offer bicycle and car parking for tenants, and will be capped by a rooftop restaurant experience amidst carefully landscaped gardens. Moreover, the multi-story office amenity space boasts equally striking terraces that open up to breathtaking views of the bay and Downtown Miami. Unlike the strict, angular corners which define its neighbors, the podium of Tower 36 embraces gentle curves throughout its design. The northwest corner is intentionally truncated, revealing an arrival court with a naturally lit open-air oculus at the entrance to the office lobby.

The podium’s facade, with its layered pattern of aluminum panels, suggests a sense of motion while naturally ventilating the parking garage within. The metal fins on the wall, a nod to Miami’s ubiquitous palm trees, feature a dual-toned design with a warm copper interior and a silver exterior. Geometric apertures thoughtfully inserted into the podium wall elevations at specific locations are designed to showcase the works of local and renowned artists, further enhancing the building’s connection with the artistic community of Miami Design District.

Tower 36 also defines the entrance to the Julia Tuttle Causeway (I-195), which serves as the main point of access from Miami’s mainland to the heart of Miami Beach.’

In the ever-evolving landscape of urban design, the emergence of design districts has become a defining characteristic of progressive cities worldwide. These vibrant enclaves, often juxtaposed against the backdrop of industrial relics or purposefully planned developments, have become catalysts for economic growth, creative collaboration and community engagement.

At its core, a design district is a concentrated area within a city that serves as a thriving hub for creative and design-focused activities. These are places where architects, designers, artists and entrepreneurs converge to showcase their talents, exchange ideas and create an immersive experience for visitors. The value of a design district extends beyond its aesthetic allure; it breathes life into the local economy and community, fostering economic growth, cultural enrichment and a sense of place.

Long before the rise of modern metropolises, ancient civilizations laid the foundation for what we now recognize as design districts. These neighborhoods of artisans and craftspeople played a crucial role in the cultural and economic fabric of their respective societies. The Agora of Athens was a bustling marketplace that served as a hub for artists, philosophers and traders. Within its grand colonnades and stoa, the Agora fostered the exchange of ideas, the birth of democracy and the creation of iconic architectural wonders like the Parthenon.

While across the Aegean Sea, the 61 covered streets and 4,000 shops that make up the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul traces its origins back to the 15th century. This labyrinthine marketplace encapsulated the rich heritage and diverse influences of the Ottoman Empire. Within its alleyways, artisans, jewelers and carpet weavers transformed the Bazaar into a beacon of trade, attracting visitors from far and wide and establishing Istanbul as a global exchange hub.

Since then, we have borne witness to the emergence of many design districts across every continent and over centuries of design movements, and it was the demise of the industrial era that may have resulted in the most significant growth of the “design district.” Following the Second World War, countless factories and warehouses were left empty, creating opportunities for revitalization and adaptive reuse.

Starting with SoHo in New York City of the 1960s, abandoned factories and warehouses became fertile ground for architectural reinvention across the world. Once-decaying cast iron structures have since been transformed with design districts emerging from the ashes of these forgotten structures, infusing new life into their once-decaying shells. More recently, in the heart of London, the vibrant community of Shoreditch has flourished within the remnants of its industrial past. Former factories have been imaginatively transformed into studios, galleries and creative workspaces, attracting a new generation of artists, designers and entrepreneurs.

Similarly, the Meatpacking District in New York City underwent a remarkable metamorphosis from a gritty industrial zone to a thriving hub of fashion, art, and design. Repurposing the neighborhood’s historic meatpacking warehouses, the district now teems with high-end boutiques, galleries and avant-garde restaurants, redefining the concept of urban cool.

In the modern era, design districts have become invaluable commodities to thriving cities and the creatives who inhabit them. They serve as vibrant cultural epicenters, nurturing collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas across disciplines. These districts attract designers, artists and entrepreneurs, fueling economic growth through increased tourism, job creation and consumer spending. Their impact transcends economic gains; design districts contribute to the cultural fabric of a city, hosting exhibitions, events and festivals that celebrate creativity and artistic expression.

However, patience is not a characteristic often coveted in urban development in the modern age, and today design districts may not be gifted the same lengthy development time as their predecessors. Rather than coming into existence as a natural ecosystem of designers, artists and makers drawn to an area with cheap rent and little in the way of planning restrictions, design districts are now often shaped by the vision of architects who are tasked to create places that accommodate the needs of the creative community while appealing to the broader public. Architects embarking on the design of a design district face multifaceted challenges to create authentic experiences.

The synergy of function and aesthetics lies at the core of successful design district architecture. Striking a balance between iconic structures that inspire and functional spaces that accommodate diverse businesses and creative enterprises is paramount. Architects must navigate the delicate balance between creating visually striking environments and ensuring that these districts cater to the needs and aspirations of the creative community and local residents.

Flexibility and adaptability are key considerations when designing design districts. The ability to evolve with changing trends, technologies and creative practices is crucial for their long-term success. Modular and versatile design principles that allow for easy reconfiguration are essential for fostering an environment of continuous innovation and adaptation.

Similarly, connectivity and accessibility play pivotal roles in the design of these districts. Careful planning of transportation networks, pedestrian-friendly spaces and digital infrastructure is required to ensure the communities are accessible and inclusive. By integrating design districts with the larger urban fabric, architects foster connections, diversity and interactions, nurturing a sense of community and place.

While purposeful planning and intentional programming are important aspects of design district creation, striking a delicate balance is paramount. Single programming can inadvertently inhibit the natural “ecosystem” of different proprietors, stifling the organic growth and diversity that defines traditional neighborhoods. Design districts should feel as though they have evolved naturally, allowing for the emergence of a rich ecosystem of creative ventures and businesses intermingled with places to eat, linger and take part in cultural events. Their restaurants and music venues often define design districts.

Purposely designing a design district is challenging, and caution should be taken against over-planning and segmenting a district into areas for function which can lead to districts failing to be vibrant homogenous neighborhoods and echoing shopping malls with an area to eat, a zone to shop, and a place to work. The Greenwich Peninsula in London has been criticized for this very reason. The purpose-built design district lacks the balance of function needed to meet the aspirations of the creative community and local residents, which is crucial for creating spaces that resonate with authenticity and a sense of belonging.

Successful design districts bear the imprints of visionary architects who have shaped these urban landscapes. Zona Tortona, Milan, Italy, was designed by a collective effort of visionary architects, including Fabio Novembre, Giulio Cappellini, and Piero Lissoni. Zona Tortona has become one of the most iconic design districts in the world and is renowned for its cutting-edge design, fashion and art events. The former industrial area now comprises sleek showrooms, galleries and creative venues. Zona Tortona’s success lies in its seamless integration of contemporary architecture and historic industrial structures, creating a captivating and vibrant atmosphere for visitors and design enthusiasts.

In Barcelona, the Poblenou Design District started around twenty years ago, when artist collectives took over abandoned factories to work and host parties. Early adopters of Poblenou included the artist Antoni Miralda and Mariscal, creator of the legendary Palo Alto design studio. Although large swathes of the area still retain a gritty nature, the neighborhood is now dotted with warehouse conversions containing open-plan homes, galleries, coworking spaces and architects’ studios, making it the historic city’s creative heart.

The economic and cultural benefits of design districts are far-reaching. They attract diverse businesses, from galleries, studios and showrooms to boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The influx of visitors and tourists fuels economic growth, job creation, and increased consumer spending. Design districts become vibrant cultural epicenters, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate artistic expression, foster cultural exchange, and enhance the local community’s quality of life. And so, if you ever find yourself at the forefront of designing a design district, consider the marketplaces of ancient Athens, the revival of SoHo by the struggling artists of New York or the design geniuses of Barcelona and perhaps 500 years from now, your efforts will stand as a testament of great design as the streets of Grand Bazaar of Istanbul continue to do so to this day.
