Shrinking Spaces, Expanding Horizons: Navigating Tiny Living in an Off-Grid Houseboat

“Water is central to these kinds of desirable ecologies that can reshape cities,” says Ham Dong, co-founder and partner of Crossboundaries. The firm contributes to creating “vital built environments” via architecture, and project blueprints are often defined by location.

In some ways, you could say the opposite is true of the firm’s latest undertaking, Solar + Design = Tiny Home on the Water. The clue is very much in the name — a modified houseboat offering the freedom of canal, lake and river life with high-end, modern specifications. Less obvious: the vessel runs entirely on solar power, making it a groundbreaking example of alternative fuel for transport, off-grid heating and cooking.

Putting things into perspective, around 1% of the UK population has no grid connection and uses bottled gas for power. In the US, around 12 million use propane as a primary energy source. Off-grid fuels are recognized as a substantial challenge to green transition. Solar Houseboat SYC 1415 is a unique example of renewable solutions applied to a situation that presents particular challenges in this area.

Currently floating in Germany, from March to November, the boat is entirely self-reliant. An entire roof of panels and an additional one on either side powers everything needed. That includes traveling up to 50 kilometers per day, at 7 KM/H, around the same speed as a standard canal barge.

On the inside, climate considerations are more hidden. A biological sewage treatment unit can be converted to drinking water, and a purification system is capable of turning river and lake water into potable. 

With just 15 meters in length and 4 meters in width to realize a bold vision combining transport, architecture and interior design, a series of interlinked but distinct areas guide you through the lower deck from a charming rear ‘terrace.’ These are almost as adaptable as the boat itself. Living areas become personal gyms, with equipment hidden beneath floor tiles that perfectly complement a simple, primary color scheme and functional finish. Beds recede before vanishing, opening more space.

Extensive research was conducted into material quality, taking into account local and regional landscapes, and seasonal weather on a continent known for real variation in temperatures. Lessons in design have clearly been learned from the development of tiny homes in recent decades, with every inch maximized through innovative solutions.

The result recalls memories of a trip to the iconic Rietveld Schroder House, in Utrecht, Netherlands. The 1920s home is an interiors landmark, carefully conceived in a way that introduced incredible flexibility to each area inside its modest sized building. De Stijl style governed aesthetics, a school defined by bold ‘pure’ colors and right angles.

Back onboard, another sleeping area appears from within the helmstead — the core technical controls of the craft itself — as if to emphasize the point that this is a deftly engineered home. In doing so, we’re given a truly spectacular view to wake up to. And this could be anywhere, because the project is made for absolute mobility and designed for relocation. Simply cast off and leave when you need a change of scenery.

We can’t remember another live-in vehicle which is so closely aligned in design with more permanent, fixed dwellings. And this hybrid speaks to our emerging needs. Like the ability to move without sacrificing the notion of ‘home’, immerse ourselves in new places but not lose identity. Others are more urgent, for example developing new forms of resilience to a changing world. Or returning to others we had, in the West at least, almost abandoned.

For the boat’s owner, Marianne, travel was the key driver in all this. Having spent her life living in cities, most recently moving from Beijing to Berlin, her dream of navigating Europe by water makes sense. There’s always something beautifully peaceful about being on a boat, whether that’s the lone barge on a quiet canal or sole ship on the ocean. 

In Europe, lack of access to green space is an increasing concern among urban populations, with a recent poll suggesting 1/3 of residents in Britain’s biggest metropolitan areas planned to leave in the future to get closer to the countryside. And yet, if the pandemic taught us the value of nature, it also made a point about the importance of connections and communities. The joy of Solar Houseboat SYC 1415 is the fact we don’t need to commit to either. We can be remote, or find ourselves on the busier channels coursing through our great cities. As such, it speaks to our current age in clear terms — a time when adaptability is becoming currency.

Located within the lively SanYuanLi Food Market in Beijing, this café designed by B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio offers a modern twist amidst the traditional marketplace. Occupying a small 25 sqm space, it stands out at the northern entrance, blending modernity with the market’s historic charm. Inspired by the market’s vibrancy, the café’s design aims to harmonize past and present, revitalizing the community and connecting with the urban environment. ‘Our focus is on establishing both the ‘uniqueness’ and ‘everyday sensibility’ of the community space, seamlessly integrating the distinctive spatial ambiance into daily life,’ describes the team.

B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio‘s design captures attention with its juxtaposition of concrete framing and a copper door. Despite its small footprint, this project aims to spark conversations about street life, community renewal, and urban connectivity, exploring innovative ways to enhance public spaces. The facade design maintains coherence with the market’s aesthetic, featuring a clever window mechanism. ‘When open, it showcases interaction and integrates communication between urban life and community scenes. When closed, the hand-hammered copper plate forms a contrast with the bustling market, resembling a piece of art,’ shares the team.

The unique shape of the concrete framing mirrors the market’s vibe, while the copper door adds visual interest without overwhelming the space. ‘With this design, our objective is to initiate a discourse on street, community revitalization, and urban connections, aiming to explore innovative approaches to communal public life’. Inside, the design fosters the ritual of enjoying coffee on the go, with the sculptural bar efficiently dividing the space. The windows blur the lines between the café and the market, encouraging interaction. Material choices, from oxidized copper to hand-cast ribbed facades and elm wood surfaces, further integrate the café with its surroundings.

Common Knowledge launches hemp-clad Tigín Tiny Homes

Irish social enterprise Common Knowledge has teamed up with hemp producer Margent Farm to design a low-carbon micro home that it claims can support people affected by the housing crisis.

Designed in-house by Common Knowledge, the Tigín Tiny Homes take the form of oversized caravans built from natural materials that include Margent Farm‘s corrugated hemp cladding panels, cork insulation and natural rubber linoleum floor tiles.

They are intended for people struggling to buy their own home. Purchasers can either buy one of the 20-square-metre micro homes ready made, or learn the skills to build their own.

With property prices in Ireland increasing by as much as 11 per cent a year, Common Knowledge believes these homes offer an affordable solution for those looking to “escape the rent trap”.

“The Tiny Home is filling that gap between moving out of the rental market and owning your own home,” said Harrison Gardner, who co-founded the organisation along with Erin McClure, Fionn Kidney and Spider Hickman and is also a passive building designer.

“The reality for a lot of people is that they can’t afford a home that’s actually ready to move into. They can only afford a home that needs a lot of work, and they can’t afford to do that work and pay rent,” Gardner told Dezeen.

“The Tiny Home is filling this gap; people can use it for a year or two or three, while they work on their forever home.”

Common Knowledge is primarily an education provider. By hosting workshops that teach everyday construction skills – like bricklaying, carpentry and welding – it aims to empower people to self-build.

The Tigín Tiny Homes – named after the Gaelic word for a small house or cottage – are the result of these workshops.

They are also available to buy ready-made at prices starting from €55,000 for people unable or unwilling to build themselves.

“We have now taught over 200 people how to build their own Tiny Homes,” said Kidney. “Of course, the byproduct of this is that we have produced four Tiny Homes that we can offer for sale.”

The target audience for these prefabricated homes includes parents supporting their grown-up children to get on the property ladder, and those who don’t have the time to take on a building project.

The profits will be used to fund future workshops.

Each home contains two floors, with the interiors led by Common Knowledge’s McClure. The lower level includes a window seat that doubles as a bed, as well as a kitchenette, a toilet and shower, and a storage area or workspace.

As the Tigín Tiny Homes are mobile, weight was a key consideration when selecting materials. It was this that led Common Knowledge to Margent Farm’s corrugated hemp panels.

First used in the pioneering zero-carbon Flat House, these panels are made by combining cannabis plant fibres with a sugar-based resin produced from agricultural waste, making them both lightweight and highly sustainable.

Although planning regulations make it difficult for these panels to be used in typical architecture projects, their use on mobile structures is not so restricted.

“Hemp ticked most of the boxes,” said Harrison, “and the fact it’s grown and manufactured in the UK is amazing.”

Other design details include large windows, an eco-composting toilet and a customised electrical system that can be used off-grid or connected up to mains power.

Common Knowledge plans to open-source the designs for the Tigín Tiny Homes so that anyone can build their own, either using these materials or alternatives.

Gardner said the plan is to release a toolkit that includes a full set of architectural drawings, a materials list with suggested suppliers, and a price scale.

“We’re trying to create options in the toolkit, so people can scale the price up or down,” he said. “For instance, if they don’t want to use cork insulation, they can switch it out for something else.”

He believes the use of natural materials, combined with the natural light and views, make the Tigín Tiny Homes a more attractive option than the traditional mobile home.

“Compared to a lot of tiny homes that exist in the world, ours is quite tall and it has a lot of glazing,” Gardner added.

“You get a real feeling of space and feel completely connected to nature.”

Other mobile micro homes recently featured on Dezeen include Quatro by Land Ark, Dodo Van by Juan Alberto Andrade and María José Váscones and Base Cabin by Studio Edwards.

Shops can provide impressive shopping experiences even with limited floor areas. Instead of using shiny and luxurious materials that crowd the space, wood can easily bring intimacy and coziness to compact spaces. This collection includes six examples of retail designs that smartly employ wood in small store spaces. They demonstrate the possibility of timber-clad interiors, revealing how wood can evoke a range of atmospheres from quiet calmness to bright warmth to intimate mystery and more.


Mi Pan

mi pan_interior_1mi pan_interior_2The bakery Mi Pan celebrates bakers’ hard work in making delicious bread. Metal trays reoccur on the shelves, wall cladding and ceiling decorations. These are the same type of tray used for bread production, reminding people of the heart of Mi Pan – the kitchen.

Instead of regular shelves, the design team uses trays and timber frames to hold freshly-baked bread. The trays emphasize the fact that the bread comes straight out of the kitchen as they are ready. Timber frames extend onto the walls and ceiling, breaking the boxy space into rhythmic fragments. The trays that hang from the ceiling hide cables from customers’ sight while making the bakery cozier by lowering the space.


Haregino Marusho

haregino marusho_interior_1haregino marusho_interior_3The design team refurbished the floor of the wedding Kimono in the traditional Japanese clothing shop Haregino Marusho and themed it with wood. Many spatial components, including display shelves, partitions and the ceiling, are in warm-color wood of similarly soft patterns. The space becomes an elegant wooden display box that does not take any spotlight from the kimono fabrics.

The ceiling panels are cut strategically to create a layering effect that resembles the Kasane (layering) of the Kimono. They also bring subtle changes in the ceiling height, making the monochromatic space more interesting to wander through.


Blackhills Cafe

blackhills cafe_interior_1blackhills cafe_frontIn the coffee bar Blackhill, smooth wooden surfaces are put in conjunction with rough concrete surfaces. They together create a zen space for enjoying a moment away from the busy central Bangkok. In contrast to the colorful urban environment outside, the materials used in the coffee shop are limited to only wood and concrete. The simplicity of the design makes it almost a meditative space.

The coffee shop has a large, glazed front that welcomes late afternoon sunlight into the shop. Natural light gets through the open-plan interior. A few seats are available by the window and by the counter. Sunset, the visual and smelling experience of coffee-making are presented all at once.


Tsubomi House (Tokyo Bud House)

By FLAT HOUSE, Tokyo, Japan

This small house has a footprint of only 280 square feet, yet it accommodates a biscuit shop and the shop owner’s family. Tsubomi House has seven different levels with no solid partitions between them. Each level is half a story higher/lower than the next one. Without walls separating each functional area, residents can move quickly from one space to another.

The interior finishing is largely in plywood which produces a gentle reflection of light. Natural light, therefore, comes in through openings on different levels and travels in the whole space. Paired with ivory steel, the light-color plywood makes the compact interior bright and continuous.


Sandra Weil Store

By Zeller & Moye, Mexico City, Mexico

sandra weil_interiorsandra weil_detailInstead of presenting the garments all at once, Sandra Weil Store’s design gradually reveals the collections as customers walk around. Floor-to-ceiling slats made of local tropical wood stand in line with equal intervals between them. They form rhythmic partitions that are visually permeable only from certain angles. This allows a comfortable level of privacy in the shop without cutting the small store space into tiny fragments.

Garments hide between the slats, not showing themselves fully until the customer is in front of them. Meanwhile, the light and view change as well from one rack to another. The shopping experience in Sandra Weil is all about exploration.


RE x SUGAR

re sugar_frontre sugar_interiorThis community bakery uses large areas of warm-color timber to create a relaxing atmosphere. Like Blackhills Café, RE x SUGAR also has a transparent shop front that embraces the sunlight. A large folding window connects indoors and outdoors while the window sills become seats.

Woods of different textures create a harmonic yet interesting space. Some wooden surfaces are smooth, for example, the front door, walls, window frames and chairs. Cupboards, the display area of bread and the floor around it are covered in rather rough and pattern-intensive wood.

A tiny sensor detects pesticide residue on individual fruits

Spotted: It is well-known that many pesticides can cause negative health and environmental issues, including dermatological, gastrointestinal, neurological, carcinogenic, respiratory, reproductive, and endocrine effects. In fact, reports show that up to half of all fruits sold in the EU contain pesticides linked to human health problems. But detecting pesticides on produce can be costly and time-consuming. However, thanks to a new sensor, it may soon be possible to change this. 

The tiny sensor, developed by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, uses a technique called surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This is a spectroscopy technique that enhances the surface vibration of molecules using nanoscale roughened metal surfaces made of gold or silver. Using laser light matched to the vibrations, the SERS technique makes it possible to detect very low concentrations of substances without the need for more complex and expensive fluorescent labelling.

The researchers deposited small droplets of silver nano-particles onto a surface using flame spray. By fine-tuning the distance between individual nano-particles, the researchers can improve their sensitivity. The sensors were tested by applying a thin layer of tracer dye and using a spectrometer to determine their molecular fingerprints. The sensors were able to reliably detect molecular signals over a period of 2.5 months. The result demonstrates that the sensors can be applied over a large area and have a relatively long shelf life.

Haipeng Li, a postdoctoral researcher and the study’s lead author explained that the sensors, “can detect pesticide residues on apple surfaces in a short time of five minutes without destroying the fruit. While they need to be validated in larger studies, we offer a proof-of-concept practical application for food safety testing at scale before consumption.” 

At Springwise, we have seen a number of recent innovations aimed at improving food safety and security. Several of these are designed to help food stay fresh longer, such as smart, antimicrobial food packaging and non-toxic emulsions which can help control the growth of fungi and bacteria on plants.

A new generation of self-powered carbon-neutral tiny homes

Spotted: According to a recent report from the National Association of REALTORS, the housing shortage in the US is reaching critical levels. The report estimates that there is currently what the association calls an ‘underbuilding gap’ of 5.5 to 6.8 million housing units since 2001. This shortage is pushing house prices and rents higher. And it’s becoming increasingly difficult for people to find affordable places to live.   

One company that’s looking to address this problem is Cosmic, a San Francisco-based startup that is building tiny houses. The company’s founder, Sasha Jokic, believes that these houses can help fill the gap by creating new rentals. In addition, Cosmic’s houses are designed to be highly energy-efficient – helping to reduce carbon emissions from the housing sector.

Ultimately, Cosmic is working to tackle two challenges simultaneously: the housing shortage and climate change. First, by creating new rental units that can be placed in people’s backyards, Cosmic can help to ease the pressure on the rental market. And second, because tiny houses are much more energy-efficient than traditional homes, they have the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions. It’s an ambitious goal, but if they can pull it off, it could have a huge impact.

Cosmic’s ultra-efficient homes start at just 350 square feet, but they come packed with high-tech features that allow them to function as both a primary residence and a secondary getaway. The secret to the tiny house’s success is its standardised frame, which includes built-in solar power and batteries. Each tiny house also includes a built-in roof and floor, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

The modular design means that the houses can be assembled quickly and easily, without the need for construction crews. And because the houses are optimised to be energy-efficient, they can be powered entirely by renewable energy sources. Lithium-ion batteries store energy from the solar panels, with the option to return any extra energy produced back to the grid. Alternatively,t, the excess energy can be used to power the main house, or an electric car.

Financial models for the houses are being arranged, with prices starting at $190,000 (around €176,000). There might also be a second option starting at $150,000 (around €139,000), where Cosmic would own the renewable energy infrastructure and the extra power generated in return for free power for the backyard and discounted power for the main house.

Other tiny home innovations spotted by Springwise include tiny houses for the homeless, an off-the-grid house on wheels, and a tiny home using passive design.
